Description

The word “mesopotamia” is formed from the ancient words “meso,” meaning between or in the middle of, and “potamos,” meaning river. Situated in the fertile valleys between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, the region is now home to modern-day Iraq, Kuwait, Turkey and Syria. Mesopotamia, a region that includes all of modern-day Iraq as well as parts of Syria, Turkey and Iran, formed a significant part of the Fertile Crescent. Located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, Mesopotamia’s name comes from a Greek term meaning “the land between the rivers.” Mesopotamia is a historical region of West Asia situated within the Tigris–Euphrates river system, in the northern part of the Fertile Crescent. Today, Mesopotamia is known as present-day Iraq. In the broader sense, the historical region of Mesopotamia also includes parts of present-day Iran, Turkey, Syria and Kuwait
