The Supreme Court had been hearing an NGO PIL. seeking their intervention in improving the condition of the widows. The Supreme court had asked the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) to verify theground reality. The NALSA report had shocked even the Supreme court.The apes dismissed a suggestion that the state and central government immediately step in and grant a pension to the widows.The Courr felt, and rightly so, that this would only push the widows deeper into the clutches of touts; leaving them with only a small percentage of their pension. Rather,they directed the NALSA to obtain the wiilingness of sulabh international to take on the responsibilityof the widows.
