Incognito, An Affair of Honor tells the story of Major John Rose, also known as Baron Gustav de Rosenthal, the only known member of the Russian nobility to fight in the American Revolutionary War. Rose left the Russian Court after killing a man in a duel. He came to America and joined the Army of the Revolution as a surgeon. He was captured by the British and held aboard a prison ship in New York’s East River. After a prisoner of war exchange, he was appointed aide-de-camp to Colonel William Irvine, commander of the Seventh Regiment of the Pennsylvania Line where he accompanied a regiment sent to take command of Fort Pitt (now Pittsburgh) for the “defense of the Western Frontier.” Rose was a founding member of the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization established by General Washington’s staff after the war. Rose’ life after returning to his homeland, Estonia, is documented in the book as is his written communication with Colonel Irvine and his family in America.
