Maharashtra is one of the states where 10.2 per cent scheduled caste population to total state population is inhabited & Mahar, a scheduled caste is the biggest endogamous population in the state, in which the siekle cell anemia is predpminantly, feported, Mahar, now call themselves Neo-Buddhist after niass conversion in 3956 by Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar is cbnsidered to be economically and educationally backward besides untouchability. Sickle cell is a genetically inherited disease from one generation to the other. A broad genetic study along with population structure with special reference to haemoglobinopathies was carried out and presented in the book. The high frequency of siekle ceil gene among Mahar has been reported by eminent scientist and researchers & the frequency varies from 0-40 per cent. The earlier studies on the Mahar has ignored the exislence of subgroups, subgroup endogamy and the Jocalization of some specific subgroups as if they have no ïnfluence on the genetic constitution in so far as the proeess of micro-evolution is concened.
