Description

ABOUT THE BOOK The Indian sub-continent emerged from the impact of British colonial rule, at its Independence in 1947, with a history of experiences that were to greatly influence its political system. Having inherited a legacy of ideas, practices and institutions from the British, India was also partitioned into the now two separate states of India and Pakistan (part of which is now Bangladesh) in August1947. The role of the military in politics in the successor states of India and Pakistan – both sharing a similarity in cultural heritage and an inherited legacy of political neutrality from the British – has taken rather different interpretations since 1947. ABOUT THE AUTHOR MA roof Raza is the series editor of the Military Affairs series, a commentator in both the print and television media on India’s security concerns and is a former Indian army officer. He was educated in India at Mayo College, Ajmer, and at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi; and did his post graduate studies at King’s College, in London and at Cambridge University. He has also held visiting fellowships at the Centre for Policy Research, Delhi, at Stimson Centre, Washington and with the War Studies Department of King’s College London.
