Description
India’s “March to Swaraj” (self-rule) was a century-long struggle against British rule, marked by various movements that culminated in independence in 1947. Key events include the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-22), the Civil Disobedience and Dandi March (1930), and the Quit India Movement (1942), which involved mass non-violent protests, boycotts of British goods, and a growing demand for complete independence, or Purna Swaraj
- Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-1922): This was the first major non-violent mass movement, involving boycotts of British goods and institutions, and encouraging Indians to withdraw from government jobs, schools, and courts.
- Civil Disobedience Movement (1930-1934): This movement was launched with the famous Dandi March, where Mahatma Gandhi marched 240 miles to the sea to make his own salt in protest of the British salt tax. The movement called for “Purna Swaraj” or complete independence and involved mass participation across various sections of society, including widespread boycotts and civil disobedience against British laws.
- Quit India Movement (1942): During World War II, Gandhi launched this final and decisive movement, which saw unprecedented participation from both men and women in the struggle for freedom
